Bienvenidos, welcome

Muchos pensamos que no hablar, escribir, leer o comprender la lengua inglesa equivale a no estar en el mundo de hoy. Estos últimos días hemos comprobado cómo hasta los rebeldes en Libia se expresan en inglés. Plataformas como Facebook, Twitter, el mundo de la ciencia y la economía, hasta las instrucciones de ese microondas japonés que acabamos de adquirir, todo está en inglés. Una de las características que iguala a millones de seres humanos es que, además de su lengua materna, tienen un buen nivel de inglés. Saben que les abre las puertas a más conocimiento y que incrementa de forma considerable las posibilidades de encontrar un trabajo mejor.

Uno de mis compromisos al asumir la dirección de DIARIO DE AVISOS fue promocionar el aprendizaje y perfeccionamiento de la lengua inglesa. Primero, de puertas para adentro. Nuestros periodistas reciben cada semana clases de inglés en distintos niveles desde el pasado mes de mayo. Ahora nos toca dar un pequeño paso más. Con ustedes, nuestros fieles lectores.

A partir de hoy, todos los sábados tendrán la oportunidad de aprender y perfeccionar su inglés desde la perspectiva del periodismo. En los años 80, DIARIO DE AVISOS lanzó un periódico, que se popularizó con la marca HERE & NOW, con el objetivo de extender aquellas informaciones más relevantes ocurridas en Tenerife, reinterpretadas a la lengua y cultura inglesas. Hemos decidido rescatar esa maravillosa iniciativa y ofrecerle, cada semana, la oportunidad de practicar la lengua de Shakespeare, en las aulas, el trabajo o casa, solo, con amigos o la familia. Las principales noticias que ocurran en Tenerife se ofrecerán, seleccionadas y tratadas adecuadamente. Espero que les resulte una herramienta útil, interesante y que le aporte más satisfacciones. In the eyes of many, not speaking, writing, reading or understanding English is tantamount to living on the margins of today’s world. Every day of late we have watched and listened to the rebels in Libya speaking in English. Facebook, Twitter, science and even the user instructions of the Japanese-made microwave you may have just purchased all come in English. A common denominator uniting many human beings is that, in addition to speaking their mother tongue, they have a good command of English, a language that not only opens up minds but also considerably increases the prospects of a better job.

As director of DIARIO DE AVISOS, I have signed up to a major commitment to facilitate the learning of English. To begin with, at in-house level, among our journalists, all of whom have been taking private English classes at different levels since last May. The time has come now to take a small step in the same direction with you, our readers.

As of now, every Saturday you will be able to practise your English in an appealing format through journalism. Back in the late 1980s, the DIARIO DE AVISOS created a sister paper, called HERE AND NOW, to facilitate the dissemination of Tenerife’s main news through the medium of English. We have decided to reinstate that wonderful initiative and offer you every week the chance to practise the language of Shakespeare at school, work, home, on your own or with family and/or friends. A wide-ranging selection of news items featured in our main paper will be published in English, along with perspectives on topical issues.
